Padma is a tyer first and a weaver second, which in ikat is the harder half: the pattern is decided at her knots, weeks before a shuttle moves. She counts thread groups aloud in Telugu while she works and says the counting is the craft — the loom only proves whether she was right.

The pattern is finished before the weaving starts. If I tied it wrong, no loom can save it.
